Strike for USS - picketing organisation and keeping in touch during the strike

21 February 2018

The UCU strike begins at tomorrow 22 February, continues on Friday then Monday 26 through Wednesday 28 February inclusive. Ìý(Then 5-8 March and 12-16 March). During strike days, colleagues should desist from all work for the full 24 hour day.

Although you may need to check your UCL email account, please don't be tempted to work! We encourage colleagues to use an out-of-office message and/or footer ().

However, for obvious reasons, UCL UCU will need to communicate with members. We will be making extensive use of , and our local website to share news and developments. Please take a moment to 'follow' or bookmark these media now along with the national , and .

We picket to raise awareness of our strike action amongst colleagues and students and to encourage colleagues to join us.

Where we have departmental UCU representatives that volunteer to organise picketing of specific departments we have delegated responsibility as appropriate. If you have a local UCU representative please contact them in the first instance and look out for local communications.

We encourage you to join our central picketing organisation which will start at 07:00 each day at the entrance to the UCL Quad on Gower Street, opposite the Cruciform building entrance and conclude around 11:00. We will aim to pair those with picketing experience and those that are new. Further information will be shared with volunteers on arrival including strike day contact mobile phone numbers. Under no circumstances can we enter UCL premises on strike days (which run for a full 24 hour period). We have identified alternative sites to rest, warm-up and take a comfort break.

It is often very cold early in the morning so do dress warmly (with lots of layers) and wear a shower proof outer layer.

Look out for announcements about a series of 'teach out' events for staff and students that will begin shortly after the conclusion of picketing on strike days.
