What can minimum wage legislation tell us about equitable growth?

The disparity听in听wages听between the听highest-听and lowest-听paid听workers听has increased听dramatically听in the last 20 years听in most developed countries.听

Economists听are striving to听understand what drives such听inequalities and what mechanisms and policies can be听implemented听to ensure听particular听sections听of the workforce are not unfairly disadvantaged,听while听at the same time encouraging听economic growth.听

While many have welcomed minimum-wage policies,听economists continue to听debate听whether听the net听effects on听employment trends and听labour markets听are positive听or negative.听

鈥淪ome are convinced that the minimum wage will raise living standards for many, while others believe it could lead to increased unemployment.鈥澨

Attila听is听informing听this debate by providing a comprehensive assessment of the economic consequences of minimum wage policies.听His听study听will provide听new insights to听inform existing economic models听and develop new听models,听which听better represent low-wage labour markets.听听

He is听working听with large-scale administrative data sets from three countries听鈥撎齮he听USA, Germany, and Hungary听鈥撎齮o听identify听how minimum wages affect the allocation of resources;听for example,听how workers move between firms and听how听fixing a minimum wage affects wage distribution and听the flow of听jobs between firms.听听

鈥淲e will also听look at the impact of the minimum wage on different groups in the population听such as听immigrant and native workers,鈥澨齢e explains,听鈥渁nd听assess the effect of minimum wages on maternal labour supply, on child development and eventually on intergenerational mobility.听

鈥淏y unbundling the structure of the low-wage labour markets听in this way,听we can better understand the causes of inequality,鈥澨齢e asserts.听听听
