Supporting a new vision for Iraq’s heritage and culture

A collaborative network including UCL historians is supporting a sustainable approach to heritage in post-conflict Iraq through locally-led research and advocacy that retells the story of Iraq's past.

The Nahrein Networkhas pioneered a new approach to research on heritage, history and the humanities in Iraq and its neighbours, driven by twin challenges of demographic change and systemic exclusion frominternationalacademia in a highly fragile post-conflict state.

“The whole regionissufferingthe effects ofwar, and many minority groups and young peoplefeelmarginalised,”explains Professor Eleanor Robson(UCLHistory), who leads the Nahrein Network.

Thenetworkincludesexpertsat ʼһ, the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford,andSulaimaniPolytechnic University and Al-Qadisiyahuniversities inIraq.Funded via the AHRC and Global Challenges Research Fund, the networkis supporting a range ofprojectsand collaborative research programmes.

Thisenablespeople across the region touse their ideas and expertise toreinterpret the region’spastas local history,and supports locallyled interdisciplinary research that will have sustainable economic and social benefits.

To date, the network has supported 19 projects acrossIraq, Turkey and Lebanonandrunsuccessfulworkshopson research skills across the region.It has also funded 15 scholarship placements in the UK.Thismulti-facetedapproach has ledtonewly interpretedcollections inlibraries andmuseums,public lectures andcultural networks.

One project, led by an Iraqiartist,examinesthelinksbetweentraditional boatbuildingand ancient forms.TheThesiger’sTaradaprojectcomparesdetails ofIraq’s marsh canoes,gathered fromoral histories and archive research, with archaeological data on similar boatsfrom ancient times.

Eventsinvolvinglocal boat builders, sheikhs andproject partners such as Nature Iraq and Basra Museum, havebroughthistoryto lifeand led toa touring exhibitionfor Iraqi museumsthatexploresthe history ofthis ancient craftand supports its revival for use in local tourism.

“Since 2017,the Nahrein Network haspromoted a people-first strategytobuilding effective support for heritage in Iraq and is advising policymakers in the Iraqi cultural sector,”explainsProfessor Robson.”We arehelping todecolonise histories of the ancient Middle Eastand supporting new ways topromote Iraq’s history.”
