Educating teachers in Jordan

Experts from the UCL Institute of Education are supporting educational reform in Jordan through a new teacher-training diploma.

To ensure children get the best education possible,it is vital that teachersare trainedto the highest standards.In Jordan,theeducationsystemis under reform, andinvestment in teacher training isa priority.

Experts fromUCL Institute of Education(IOE), led by Professor Norbert Pachler,Pro-Vice-Provost(Education),havebeen working with the Queen Rania Teacher Academy (QRTA), theUniversity of Jordan andlocalMinistry of Education,todevelopa nine-month initialteachingdiploma.

“Ourworkwith Jordanian colleagueshas focused on co-developing an internationally recognised diploma that is strongly contextualised to Jordan and its educational system,” Professor Pachler explains.

“We are delighted thatthis teachingdiploma is now being rolled out to several universities across Jordan.”

At the outset,IOE academics visitedJordanto better understandthe quality of teaching and learning in Jordanian public schools. Through a series offocus groups anda literaturereview, theyassessed out what was needed.

ThePre-Service Teacher Education Professional Diplomalaunched in 2016 andcurrently boastsnearly 1,500graduates. It provides an opportunity for aspiring teachers to learn, practice and engagewith prominent educational thinkers, as well asshare theirexperiences andtheirpassionforteachingwith colleagues.

Professor Pachler and colleagues from IOEcontinue tosupportthe programme, helpingtorecruitand developthose educating theteachers,aswell asselecting students.They havedesigned and implemented a robust quality assurance frameworkthat reaches international standardsandhaveadvised on teaching environments,such as classroomsand facilities as well as virtual learningtools.

“We aresupportingnewsystem-wide approaches to the professionaldevelopmentof teachersin Jordanthat buildson the extensive expertise ofUCL Institute ofEducation. We are delighted thatthis teachingdiploma is now being rolled out to several universities acrossJordan.” he adds.
