Experts from the UCL Institute of Education are supporting educational reform in Jordan through a new teacher-training diploma.

To ensure children get the best education possible,听it is vital that teachers听are trained听to the highest standards.听In Jordan,听the听education听system听is under reform, and听investment in teacher training is听a priority.听听

Experts from听UCL Institute of Education听(IOE), led by Professor Norbert Pachler,听Pro-Vice-Provost听(Education),听have听been working with the Queen Rania Teacher Academy (QRTA), the听University of Jordan and听local听Ministry of Education,听to听develop听a nine-month initial听teaching听diploma.听

鈥淥ur听work听with Jordanian colleagues听has focused on co-developing an internationally recognised diploma that is strongly contextualised to Jordan and its educational system,鈥� Professor Pachler explains.

鈥�鈥淲e are delighted that听this teaching听diploma is now being rolled out to several universities across Jordan.鈥澨�

At the outset,听IOE academics visited听Jordan听to better understand听the quality of teaching and learning in Jordanian public schools. Through a series of听focus groups and听a literature听review, they听assessed out what was needed.听听

The听Pre-Service Teacher Education Professional Diploma听launched in 2016 and听currently boasts听nearly 1,500听graduates. It provides an opportunity for aspiring teachers to learn, practice and engage听with prominent educational thinkers, as well as听share their听experiences and听their听passion听for听teaching听with colleagues.听

Professor Pachler and colleagues from IOE听continue to听support听the programme, helping听to听recruit听and develop听those educating the听teachers,听as听well as听selecting students.听They have听designed and implemented a robust quality assurance framework听that reaches international standards听and听have听advised on teaching environments,听such as classrooms听and facilities as well as virtual learning听tools.听听

鈥淲e are听supporting听new听system-wide approaches to the professional听development听of teachers听in Jordan听that builds听on the extensive expertise of听UCL Institute of听Education. We are delighted that听this teaching听diploma is now being rolled out to several universities across听Jordan.鈥� he adds.听
