Major technological programmes of innovation aimed at addressing global challenges such as renewable energy deployment, carbon dioxide removal and solar geoengineering bring it with it demands on engineering which the professions may or may not be ready to meet. By bringing engineering practice insight, together with critical social science inquiry we aim to understand the challenges of deploying technology with engineering as it is currently governed vs exploring engineering ‘as it could be’ – and in the process avoid deep challenges that prevent technologies from helping society effectively and inclusively.
