This course is open to anyone聽interested in the subject. You don't need any particular knowledge or experience to attend.
The Portfolio Development: Film聽course is recommended for those who would like to submit portfolios to one of the聽UCL Media BA聽programmes or other film-related courses.
Course content and structure
The course will take place between 15 and 19 July 2024 and will include face-to-face classes taking place at 皇家华人 East.
The structure of the course is as follows:
Day 1: Filmmaking essentials聽
- Introduction to Filmmaking: basics and terminology聽

Day 2: Understanding your unique voice聽
- Self-assessment: identifying your filmmaking style and strengths.聽
- Defining your voice: what do you want to tell?聽
Day 3: Crafting your filmmaker statement聽
- Articulating your filmmaking philosophy and vision.聽
- Writing an impactful filmmaker statement.聽
- Peer review and feedback session on filmmaker statements.聽
Day 4: Selecting and presenting your work聽
- Curating your best work: short film selection and editing.聽
- Creating a cohesive portfolio structure.聽
- Practical exercise: editing your showreel.
Day 5: Feedback and Fine-Tuning聽
- Peer and Instructor feedback on portfolios.聽
- Refining your portfolio based on feedback.聽
- Final portfolio presentation strategies.聽
Learning outcomes
Participants will leave this course with not only an in-depth understanding of filmmaking but also a refined and polished portfolio ready to make a lasting impression on potential employers, film schools, or collaborators.聽
