More than half the world’s population now lives in cities, making them a key site for experimentation and societal change. Yet many cities are saddled with outdated infrastructure, pressing resource problems and increasing social and economic divisions. In this context, how do different types of urban expertise matter to effective policymaking? What contributes to the success of an innovative urban idea and a disruptive urban experiment? And, conversely, how can urban experts, in academia and beyond, effectively engage city leaders?Ìý
This module examines urban innovation in practice, to better understand the roles of urban practitioners, and the public, private and third sector institutions they work across, in shaping and implementing different forms of innovation. The module draws from diverse disciplinary perspectives including urban studies, science and technology studies, geography, politics and sociology, to analyse how new forms of social, technological and governance innovation are shaping cities. The content explores a range of urban issues, including new forms of mobility, smart technologies and digital innovations, as well as biodiversity, environmental sustainability and climate mitigation and adaptation.
The module’s assessment requires students to applying the expertise and skills developed throughout the module to a real-world policy challenge.
