Description
This course will provide an in-depth understanding of tropical ecosystems to allow students to fully engage with a key question of our time: what is the future for tropical regions, given today’s rapid and accelerating social and environmental change? Blending theoretical concepts with real-world examples, the module will cover various aspects of tropical ecosystems (e.g., climate, hydrology, ecology, socio-economic and cultural dynamics) and consider how they may change in the future, including the role of conservation policy and practice. The module will also further skills in critically appraising data and scientific research and develop transferable skills in problem-solving and in the assimilation and presentation of scientific information for diverse audiences. There are three core aims of the module:
- Gain an in-depth understanding of tropical ecosystems; how they may change in the future and what people and institutions can do to affect those futures;
- Build on skills in critically appraising data and scientific research;
- Develop transferable skills, particularly in the assimilation and presentation of scientific information for other users of research information.
