Restrictions
Available to students in Years 3 and 4, also open to students taking MSc Biomedical Sciences or on the stem cells stream of the MRes Biosciences. Students must have a suitable grounding in cell and developmental biology, e.g. CELL0009 and CELL0010/CELL0023 and BIOL0013, or equivalent eg MBBS Developmental Biology. Please contact the module organisers if you have any questions about the background required. This module has limited capacity and you are not guaranteed a place unless it is compulsory for your degree programme/stream/pathway/route. If it is a listed option in your programme summary you will be given priority should more students apply than there are places.

Description

Content and Module Aims

The aim of the module is to provide an up-to-date survey of the rapidly changing field of stem cell research, from fundamental principles to the practicalities of regenerative medicine. Students will learn about the basic biology of stem cells and how it differs in various tissues, how stem cells are involved in disease from genetic disorders to ageing, how stem cells can be harnessed to regenerate tissues, what challenges regenerative medicine faces, and the approaches taken by researchers to overcome them.

  • Nerve tissue engineering
  • Ethical aspects of stem cell research and therapies
