Description

Stem cells hold the promise to impact human health. Their innate ability to self-renew and unique developmental capacity enables generation of unlimited numbers of multiple types of differentiated progeny. These features could be exploited to develop cellular therapies for the repair or replacement of diseased and damaged tissues in the clinic.

This module will act as a primer on stem cell biology and the potential therapeutic application of stem cells. The syllabus includes: basic stem cell biology including stem cell division and fates, sources of stem cells, methods to generate or isolate populations of stem cells, ethical considerations and other barriers to the use of human stem cells, stem cells and disease modelling, and applications of stem cell based therapies in the clinic; covering aspects of both ongoing research and applications in development.
