Description

The module thematically explores the modern cultural and social development of South-Eastern Europe. The module familiarises students with key socio-cultural phenomena like the development of national cultures and the role of religion, the evolution and politics of language, historically patriarchal gender relations and kinship structures, and modernisation. In addition, the module will contrast the Communist path towards modernisation with social change in non-Communist countries of Southeastern Europe such as Greece and Turkey. The module will also explore key aspects of material culture including music, literature, art and film. The module will identify regional trends, rather than discussing national histories separately discussing Southeastern Europe as a region and in its larger European context.
