Description

Overview:

The formation of high quality images of internal structures or processes in the body is of fundamental importance for the accurate diagnosis and/or monitoring of disease. This module provides an introduction to the basic principles, techniques and applications of biomedical imaging.

The lectures cover the main imaging modalities in current clinical use, namely X-Ray imaging including computed tomography (CT), Nuclear medicine, Ultrasound imaging, Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and optical methods; as well as more recent developments in medical imaging research such as photoacoustic imaging and electrical impedance tomography.

For each method the following aspects are examined: the underlying physical principles, technology, techniques, image characteristics, image processing, clinical applications and economic and safety considerations.
