Description

This module enables students to continue formulating their own understanding of how the construction industry works, specifically through the lens of culture. This module introduces key concepts, theories and cases on the general study of organisational culture and cultures, before focusing in on literature which examines the culture of construction more specifically. It also covers a range of topics and perspectives on equality, diversity and inclusion, including the protected characteristics, inclusive and exclusive behaviours, as well as bullying and harassment, mental health concerns, and unconscious bias. Industry statistics and reports are used to appreciate the scale of the issues.

This approach gives students a broad understanding of ideas from the literature on culture which enables them to utilise these as a framework to examine how organisations work, both internally and within a wider environment. It continues to build the theoretical knowledge as well the critical analytical skills that will help students reflect on their own project management practices and those of others. Importantly, it provides an open forum to discuss matters of gender and race in an industry which is often criticised for its lack of diversity and looks at case studies of how construction firms are trying to be more inclusive.

Lectures, discussions and presentations in class are informed by selected reading tasks from key books, academic papers and industry/policy and relevant professional bodies, such as RICS and the CIPD, as well as action groups and campaigners. The module reading list will include introductory texts on gender studies and critical race theory, as well as relevant legislation and best practice guidance.

Students are required to submit an extended abstract and then a term paper at the end of the module. The module leader provides formative feedback on a small group presentation, and the module includes a dedicated session on ‘fairness, inclusion and respect’ training, from an industry specialist.
