Description
This module provides students with understanding of the role and implementation of emerging tools and technologies for stem cell and gene therapy applications. This includes the novel, groundbreaking biological tools such as CRISPR/Cas9, TALENs, ZFNs and synthetic biology used for genome engineering in addition to the technology platforms that are used for each of the key unit operations with respect to characterization and process development (e.g. microfluidics); the technology gaps in the analytical space, such as reliable in-process analysis and control tools, will be identified and discussed.
On completion of this module, students will be able to:
- Understand and discuss the role and use of novel biological tools such as CRISPR/Cas9, TALENs and ZFNs for stem cell and gene therapy applications.
- Evaluate novel devices and tools used for novel therapeutic process development, monitoring, control and characterization.
- Analyse and discuss how synthetic biology can be used to design and engineer cells and their products.
- Demonstrate a working knowledge of typical technology platforms and unit operations used in stem cell and gene therapy development
- Review and justify the use of viral and non-viral technologies for gene replacement and editing.
- Critically evaluate the research literature pertaining to novel gene editing and characterization tools for stem cell and gene therapy applications.
