Description
The MA Education Dissertation Module supports students to undertake an original independent scholarly investigation in the field of education.Ìý Students often choose a dissertation research topic that is relevant to their personal and professional interests and typically include some fieldwork or empirical data collection.
By carrying out a small independent research project, students will have the opportunity to:
- Identify a relevant and distinctive topic
- Engage with theoretical perspectives
- Ask critical questions about an educational issue
- Search for, collate, and synthesise a wide range of sources related to an educational issue
- Identify and use appropriate research methods
- Develop their positionality in relation to an educational issue and the wider field of education studies
- Make a scholarly contribution to the field of education studies
- Develop a critical perspective, and understand alternative perspectives on an educational issue
- Understand the ethical dilemmas involved in educational research and take appropriate steps to mitigate any issues that arise.
- Develop a strong foundation for future independent research
Students have a dissertation supervisor to support them through the development, execution and writing up of their dissertation project. Supervisors will provide formative feedback on the following submissions throughout the module:
- A dissertation proposal
- An ethics application
- An initial (5000 words maximum) submission
- A final submission of a collection of draft chapters or a full draft dissertation
This module is assessed by:
A 16,000 word (+ 10%) written research project
