Description

Overview:

This module is a fundamental introduction to engineering in the marine environment. It introduces maritime structures and vehicles in the context of the global maritime industry. Ocean engineering is a broad field, encompassing mechanics, structural engineering, electrical engineering/electronics, fluid dynamics, and much more. It is very interdisciplinary, and this module aims to provide a comprehensive introduction to this fascinating and important subject.

The module covers the design and analysis of marine structures, including hydrostatics and stability, resistance, and powering. It also provides an opportunity for students to conduct experiments in the fluids laboratory.

During the module, students will work in groups to design, build, and test a platform with an integrated wave sensor. This will allow students to apply what they have learnt in the lectures as well as gain experience of manufacturing/prototyping, electronics, and sensors.

This module is the first of three of three for the Ocean Engineering Minor:

  • Module 3 (Y3) – Maritime Design

Topics covered:

  • Uses of the sea. Taxonomy of ocean structures. Overview of naval architecture and marine engineering.
  • Anatomy of a ship. Elements of ship design.
  • Hydrostatics and stability.
  • Ship structures. Loading, bending moments and shear forces. Ship structural design.
  • Resistance and propulsion. Model testing, propeller performance, engine selection.
  • Marine environment. Waves, wind, and tides. Noise in the Oceans.
  • Seakeeping and manoeuvring.
  • Submersibles.

Learning outcomes:

Upon completion of this module students will be able to:

  • Demonstrate an understanding of the range of different types of ships and ocean structures, the principal differences between them and the reasons for those differences.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the engineering challenges posed by operating in the marine environment.
  • Assess the strength of a simple marine structure against wave bending loads and hydrostatic loads.
  • Balance weight, buoyancy, and volume in a marine vehicle design.
  • Assess the stability of a floating object and understand the effect on stability of changing various geometric parameters.
  • Be able to carry out an experimental model test and use the results to determine the required power for a full-scale ship.
  • Have an appreciation of the ocean as an environment, how we benefit from it and how we can protect it.
