Description

This module introduces students to the design process for hardware-based digital solutions such as FPGAs and ASICs and software-based embedded micro-controller solutions.

On completion of this course, students should be able to:
- Understand the differences between microcontrollers, microprocessors and programmable gate arrays.
- Capture the application requirements and develop it into a system design from a functional point of view.
- Break the system down into the smallest possible implementable and verifiable subsystems.
- Develop algorithms or circuits to implement the subsystems.
- Choose the appropriate digital platform for physical implementation.
- Choose the appropriate approach to optimize for speed and area to meet the system requirements.
- Implement the entire design process from specification through to realization in digital hardware and testing.
- Identify and explain the features and functional blocks of a microcontroller.
- Describe the architecture of a microcontroller and the functionality of memory.
- Distinguish between system components and microcontroller peripherals.
- Apply logic operations to manipulate registers.
- Explain the structure of a C program for microcontrollers.
