Professor Tim Baker

Since 1945, the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) has awarded recipients the James Clayton Prize for exceptional contribution to mechanical engineering and related science, technology and invention.

Its most recent recipient is Professor Tim Baker (MBE), who co-leads the UCL Ventura project in collaboration with the UCL Institute of Healthcare Engineering, UCL Mechanical Engineering, University College London Hospital (UCLH) and Mercedes-AMG High Performance Powertrains. Tim is also credited with rejuvenating the design challenge for students with IMechE and UCL Mechanical Engineering.

On receiving the award, Professor Tim Baker said:

鈥淚t has been an absolute privilege to co-lead a team of engineers and doctors from University College London in partnership with industry. Thanks to everyone鈥檚 hard work, patients across the NHS and around the world have been treated with the UCL Ventura breathing device. What we achieved as a team was the result of everyone鈥檚 determination and commitment at a time of unprecedented need. I am proud to have worked alongside stars from the NHS in response to Covid-19 and I am honoured to represent the entire team.鈥

Professor Tim Baker鈥檚 team received the Royal Academy of Engineering鈥檚 President鈥檚 Special Award in 2020 for Pandemic Services in recognition of their exceptional efforts in tackling Covid-19, and Tim was also awarded an MBE for services to healthcare in the UK and abroad in the Queen鈥檚 Birthday Honours 2020.
