Celebrating the first MAPS Visiting Fellowship Scheme 2022

The MAPS Faculty's first Visiting Fellowship Scheme supported a total of 14 successful visits from global institutions to UCL. The Faculty welcomed the hosts and their visitors across two informal networking events on 30th June and 12th July.

MAPS Visiting Fellowship Scheme

The MAPS Visiting Fellowship scheme, coordinated by Vice-Dean International Professor Ofer Lahav,ÌýaimedÌýto develop ongoing and new collaborations and ideas. The scheme brought to UCLÌýa total of 14 visitors from several global and national institutions and organisations.Ìý

The two informal networking events aimed to welcome the visitors and thank them for their visit and collaboration with UCL.ÌýThe visitors and their hosts thanked the MAPS Faculty for the opportunity and encouragement to facilitate these collaborations.Ìý

The first group included ProfessorÌýJonathan Tennyson (UCL Physics and Astronomy) in place of Professor Sergey YurchenkoÌýand his visitor Professor Robert R. Gamache from UMass Lovell in the USA,ÌýProfessorÌýIan Robinson (London Centre for Nanotechnology)Ìýand his visitor Professor Miguel A.G. Aranda from the Universidad de Málaga in Spain, Professor Christian Boehmer (UCL Mathematics) and his visitor Dr Franco Fiorini from the Instituto Balseiro, Universidad Nacional de Cuyo in Argentina,ÌýProfessor Srabani Taraphder from the Indian Institute of Technology in India (her host was Dr Edina Rosta in UCLÌýPhysics and Astronomy) andÌýProfessor Furio Cora (UCL Chemistry) (his visitor was Professor Mark Wilson from the University of Oxford).Ìý

The second group included Professor Richard Ellis (UCL Physics and Astronomy)Ìýand his visitor Professor Tim Heckman from the John Hopkins University in the USA, DrÌýTom Headen from the ISIS Neutron and Muon Faculty (his host was Professor Neal Skipper in UCL Physics and Astronomy), DrÌýGiorgio Volpe ( UCL Chemistry) and his visitor Dr Nuno Araujo from the University of Lisbon in Portugal.

Other attendees included Professors Andrew Wills (MAPS Vice-Dean Research), Andrew Fisher (LCN Head of Department), Giovanna Tinetti (Head of the Astrophysics Group) and her visitor Professor Masahiro IkomaÌýfrom the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan (NAOJ), with organisers Professor Ofer Lahav (MAPS Vice-Dean International) and Ethne James-Souch (PA to the MAPS Vice-Deans).

We also thank the other hosts and their visitors who took part in the MAPS Visting Fellowship Scheme, who could not attend the networking events. These were host Professor Codina CotarÌý(UCL Statistical Science) and her visitor Dr Mircea Petrache fromÌýPontificia Universidad Catiolica de Chile in Chile, host Dr Ioanna Manolopoulou (UCL Statistical Science)Ìýand her visitor Dr Rodrigo Targino from the Getulio Vargas Foundation in Brazil, host Professor Lucie Green (UCL Space and Climate Physics) and her visitor Dr Ritesh Patel from theÌýIndian Institute of Astrophysics in India, host Dr David Long (UCL Space and Climate Physics) and his visitor Dr Mariarita Murabito from theÌýINAF Osservatorio Astronomico di Roma in Italy, host Professor Amelie Saintonge (UCL Physics and Astronomy) and her visitor Professor Sara Ellison fromÌýUniversity of Victoria in Canada, host Dr Jonathan Breeze (UCL Physics and Astronomy) and his visitor Professor Enrico Salvadori from the University of Turin in Italy.

We hope this initiative receives continued supportÌýin future years.
