Alexandra Tsamadou – LLM Maritime Law 1999 & LLM Banking and Finance Law 2000

alexandra tsamadou

I have completed two Master of Law (LLM) degrees at »Ê¼Ò»ªÈË Laws. I chose Maritime Law for my first LLM as my goal was to work in shipping after returning to Greece, where I’m originally from. Before completing this LLM degree, I had already decided that I wanted to continue my learning experience at »Ê¼Ò»ªÈË. I therefore applied for my second LLM in Banking and Finance Law.

This was an excellent addition to my CV, as banking and finance knowledge is vital when it comes to matters such as shipping, shipbuilding and syndicated loans. Both qualifications have greatly assisted my career and I am very happy I studied at one of the most prestigious universities in the world.

The main attraction to UCL Laws was the renowned Maritime Law degree specialism programme, which I knew would be essential for my career goals. In addition, I had completed my LLB in London and having enjoyed London life so much, my main desire was to stay and continue my LLM studies there. Therefore, the combination of obtaining a degree from a well-renowned university, while also being able to make the most of student life, made me choose UCL Laws. I had the chance to go to concerts, visit museums, galleries, watch plays and go for weekend breaks all around England.

I was very lucky to be part of a great cohort of students. During my first LLM, one of my tutors was Dr Aleka Mandaraka-Sheppard, who I occasionally meet at shipping events in Piraeus and Athens in Greece. I have maintained the strong links I built at university – for example, I still visit London for work and pleasure. My best friend who I met while studying in London still lives there, and I visit whenever I get the chance. All in all, the connections I made at »Ê¼Ò»ªÈË and London are still a part of my life in Greece.

Since graduating, I returned to Athens where I qualified as a Greek lawyer and started my career as in-house counsel for a series of shipping companies. I am now Legal Manager for a prominent Greek shipowner, working in the group's head office in Athens. Recently, I obtained my International Diploma in Governance, Risk and Compliance from the ICA.

As a Greek who studied in London for both my undergraduate and postgraduate studies, I would strongly advise students to work hard and play hard. London is probably the best place to study and enjoy student life, as well as meet people from all over the world. Become immersed in the multicultural environment that makes London so unique and make the best of the diversity which is on offer. If I could, I would do it all over again!
