Modules

Take a language module for credit as part of your undergraduate or graduate degree programme. We offer courses in nine modern foreign languages, English for Academic Purposes and British Sign Language.

Registration for modules in 2024-25

Registration for modules in 2024-2025 is open for Both NEW and CONTINUING UCL students
In order to take a CLIE language module you need to BOTH complete the CLIE online application form and AND have the CLIE language module as one of your module selections on Portico.

All CLIE language modules are in the UCL Module Catalogue; you can find a brief description of each module as well as a list of summative assessments.

Class start

CLIE language module classes startedÌýin the week beginning Monday 07ÌýOctober 2024Ìý(»Ê¼Ò»ªÈËeek 7).

Teaching delivery

  • CLIE language modules are taught face-to-face wherever possible.
  • Workshops are online.
  • Any online sessions will be synchronous.

Schedule

Classes areÌýscheduledÌýaround theÌýavailability of the students registered for each module,Ìýusing information on the UCL Online Timetable. We started schedulingÌýclasses in August 2024Ìýonce the main module registration period for continuing students had finished.ÌýClasses are currently being roomed and will show onÌýtheÌýUCL Online Timetable soon, once this process is complete and if you have the module selected on Portico then you should see your allocated group(s) in your personal timetable.

Classes forÌýDutch modules will be scheduled in the week of 16ÌýSeptember 2023.

The schedule is stillÌýprovisionalÌýso there may be changes to some groups, and new groups may be created;Ìýclasses shouldÌýbe confirmed by 23ÌýSeptember 2024.

Online Timetable

You should see your allocated group(s) for your module in your personal timetable on the , where you can see the class location. We recommend you check the shortly before your class each week in case of any updates.

Modules appear on the the day after you select them in Portico.

After this you are then allocated to a specific CLIE language module class(es). Allocations are done automatically on a daily basis; in cases where the system is unable to meet all criteria then this is done manually, when we take into account your other teaching events.

Eligibility

To enrol on a CLIE language module, you must:

  • be a current undergraduate or graduate student at »Ê¼Ò»ªÈË or another college of the University of London
  • have authorisation from your department to study a module as part of your degree programme
  • be here for the full academic year.

All CLIE modules (15 or 30 credits) start in October and run through to March.Ìý

Modern Foreign Languages (MFL)

Languages include: Arabic, Dutch, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Mandarin, Portuguese and Spanish across all levels (15-30 credits).

EAP student reading a text in class

English for Academic Purposes (EAP)

Modules include: English Language Skills for Academic Purposes, Academic Writing in English for Native or Non-Native Speakers (15 credits).

British Sign Language

British Sign Language (BSL)

Study British Sign Language at level 1 or 2 (15 credits).
