British Sign Language

New for 2024/25 - British Sign Language.

Aims and objectives

The twenty-week course aims to cover basic British Sign Language, with practice in communicating with Deaf people on a range of topics, using both classroom time and online resources. You will also learn about the nature of the British Deaf community, its culture and language.

At the end of the course, you will be expected to:

  • Be able to introduce yourself in BSL.
  • Be able to exchange personal information in BSL about your health and where you live and work.
  • Be able to understand short narratives in BSL about generic topics such as the home, the family, the workplace and leisure activities.
  • Understand the basic linguistic features of BSL.
  • Understand the history and culture of the British Deaf community, and the implications of being deaf in a hearing world.

Levels

As this is a new course, we are offering beginner only.

Please note this is a 20-week course (two term minimum enrolment), with an option for an extra term to include a term of revision and consolidation.

Language level assessment

As we are only offering beginner classes at the moment, we are not running assessments. This may change in the future.
