Stages of Judging Applications
Stage 1: Supervisor Review
Your application will be reviewed by the project supervisor.听 They will be looking to see that you have understood the project and meet the Essential Criteria.
Stage 2: Interview
Longlisted candidates will be invited by email to a short online interview.
Stage 3: Judging Panel
Shortlisted candidates' applications will be reviewed by a Judging Panel in March 2025.听 The Panel will decide which applicants become Laidlaw scholars.听 There are up to 30 Laidlaw scholarships available each year.
Applications are all judged听together after the closing date.听 We do not operate a "rolling application" system.
Self-proposed projects
If you are proposing your own project, you will need to find a member of academic staff to be your supervisor before you apply.听You will be asked a number of questions about your project proposal on the application form.听You should consider these questions together with your project supervisor.听Please give as much detail as you can.听
The panel will be looking for a convincing, logical and well-considered project which fits well into a six-week period.听However, the panel will not expect you to have worked out every detail at this stage.
Check whether your proposal would 听-听you should factor in additional time for this (it can take months to obtain approval).听You must have approval in advance of your start date, as a project without ethical approval (where required) cannot go ahead.
How you will be contacted
Shortlisted applicants will be contacted in the middle of听February and invited to undertake an interview.
We will contact all applicants via email in the middle of March 2024听with the result of their application.
