11 October 2021

Professor Jeff Bezemer has become UCL Institute of Education’s (IOE) first Vice-Dean (Health).

Jeff Bezemer

Vice-Dean (Health) is a new role that will see Professor Bezemer leading the IOE’s portfolio of Health work. This includes leading on the Health strategy’s development, implementation and annual monitoring; aligning it with the IOE’s faculty and research strategic plans; working with Departments to develop health-related activity across the IOE; and connecting with UCL-wide initiatives.

Professor Bezemer will take on the three-year term alongside his role as Head of the Department of Culture, Communication and Media (CCM). Professor Bezemer joined the IOE in 2004 and previously served as Interim Director of the UCL Knowledge Lab before becoming Head of CCM. His research focuses on clinical communication and education and health care delivery. He has worked on projects about teamwork and inter-professional communication, surgical education, and clinical decision making in the operating theatre and intensive care unit.

Professor Li Wei, IOE Director and Dean, said: “This is an important strategic area for the IOE. We have expertise in health education and health communication in particular that can make a significant contribution to the wide-ranging work the UCL does in health. Jeff's appointment is timely. He absolutely has the right knowledge and experience to lead us in this area of work.”

Professor Bezemer said: “I am delighted to take on this exciting new role to promote and develop the IOE’s academic portfolio in the health domain. We are already doing some very impressive work in this area and there’s great potential to advance this, not least through cross-faculty collaborations. I look forward to joining UCL’s Health Strategy Forum and working with IOE colleagues on setting strategic priorities and seeking opportunities for funding important health projects.”
