(SAVA), led by Dr Maja Fowkes, is a visual arts led interdisciplinary research project that challenges the West-centric discourses of the Anthropocene by asserting the constitutive role of the environmental histories of Socialism in the formation of new geological times. The research is organised around five thematic streams through which the distinctiveness, epistemologies, relationalities and potentialities of the Socialist Anthropocene are analysed: the socialist praxis of extractivism, infrastructures of the socialist system, transformation of the countryside, species under socialism and cultures of the Socialist Anthropocene. SAVA incorporates the insights of environmental history, the history of science and beyond-human anthropology, while drawing on global studies of historical socialisms to go beyond regionalism and formulate the Socialist Anthropocene as a globally transformative concept.

The SAVA Research Fellow in Environmental Anthropology will carry out an individual research project into an environmental aspect of Indigenous cultures under socialism and/or beyond human anthropology of socialism, while the individual research of the SAVA Research Fellow in Global Socialisms will be on an environmental aspect of global socialism. The fellows will contribute to investigation of the Socialist Anthropocene with a focus on the themes of agrarian politics, species under socialism and cultures of the Socialist Anthropocene, by engaging in an interdisciplinary dialogue with fellow members of the SAVA team. The SAVA Research Fellow in Environmental Anthropology and the SAVA Research Fellow in Global Socialisms are 30-month 0.5 FTE roles which starts on 1 January 2025 and ends on 30 June 2027.
