The environmental impact of waste left by humans in orbit is an increasingly topical issue, not least because of the growing risks that collisions with waste pose for existing and future off-Earth infrastructures and space missions. By contrast, the space debris that falls on the ground along the path of space rocket launch trajectories is a considerably less well known issue. Social anthropologists Lud臎k Bro啪 and Makar Ter毛shin have each conducted ethnographic research with communities affected by space debris in Altai Republic (RU) and in Arkhangelsk Oblast (RU) and Ulytau Region (KZ), respectively. Join us at the Centre for Outer Space Studies, as we get a chance to hear from Lud臎k and Makar in conversation about life under falling space debris.

The Centre for Outer Space Studies (COSS) was founded in 2019 to promote research and teaching related to the social study of Outer Space and our relationship to the cosmos and the planet. The Centre aims to act as a catalyst for serious debate, via talks, exhibitions, film screenings and other events that help us explore the socio-political impact of space science and the wider human relationship to outer space.

Lud臎k Bro啪 is Head of the Department of Ecological Anthropology at the Institute of Ethnology, Czech Academy of Sciences聽and a PI of an ERC funded project聽Ludek is the author of聽 and a听肠辞-别诲颈tor, with聽Daniel Muenster, of聽.
Makar Ter毛shin
Makar Ter毛shin is a social anthropologist and documentary photographer. He is a PhD candidate at University College London. His research interests concern material culture studies, environmental and visual anthropology, with an ethnographic focus on Russia and Kazakhstan. Currently, Makar is working on a project exploring politics and ecology of the Russian space industry in Central Kazakhstan. The is supported by London Art and Humanities Partnership.
