Born in the Northeast of England, Adam went to Durham Johnston Comprehensive School and then to Oxford University. He was a lecturer at Queen Mary and a Junior Research Fellow at Sidney Sussex College Cambridge before taking up a post at »Ê¼Ò»ªÈË. He teaches a range of courses in US history, but his specialism is the politics and culture of the mid nineteenth century. In 2017, the University of North Carolina Press published his latest book, . Adam's previous books include (New York: Oxford University Press, 2006). (You can watch a video of him giving a lecture about that book .) ÌýHe's also the author of (New York: Palgrave, 2007), and of published by the History Press in 2014. He also contributed to an AHRC-funded project and to .

PhD supervision
