The French government bestowed the prestigious honour (Chevalier de l’Ordre des Palmes Académiques) in recognition of Dr Guedj’s significant scientific achievements and his instrumental role in fostering Franco-British academic and scientific cooperation.

Dr Guedj, an Associate who will be promoted to Professor of Machine Learning and Principal Researcher in Foundational Artificial Intelligence on 1 October 2024, is a research scientist at Inria, France’s top research institute in mathematics and computer science, and a Turing Fellow with The Alan Turing Institute.

Since 2020, he has served as the founder and scientific director of The Inria London Programme, a joint lab that bridges research, innovation and global engagement efforts between France and the UK.

Speaking about the award, Dr Guedj said: “Receiving the Academic Palms is not only a personal honour but also a profound acknowledgement of our collaborative efforts at the UCL-Inria partnership. It reaffirms our commitment to advancing global science through impactful international partnerships.”

UCL's President & Provost Dr Michael Spence signed a Letter of Intent between UCL and Inria in March this year, during a visit to UCL by Sylvie Retailleau, French Minister of Higher Education & Research and Her Excellency Hélène Tréheux-Duchêne, French Ambassador to the UK. The agreement established a roadmap to launch the Joint Centre on Artificial Intelligence.

The planned UCL-Inria centre, set to launch later this year, will significantly advance research collaborations in computer science, with a core focus on AI. It will signal a pivotal step in supporting Franco-British cooperation on science, innovation and global engagement.

Dr Spence said: “I was delighted to hear of the Chevalier de l’Ordre des Palmes Académiques bestowed by the French Government. What terrific news, and a fitting testament to both Dr Guedj’s machine learning research and his success at fostering academic collaboration between France and the UK.”
