The UCL Engineering Foundation Year

By supporting UCL's Engineering Foundation Year programme, you can make sure a world-class engineering education is in reach of anyone with ideas and energy, regardless of background.

What is the Engineering Foundation Year?

It is a new one-year pre-undergraduate course aimed at talented, aspiring engineers from underrepresented social backgrounds.

It is designed for:

  • those who did not, or were not able to study appropriate subjects for direct entry
  • those who may have faced obstacles or disruption to their learning
  • those who have previously pursued alternative qualifications
  • returners to education, refugees and those who are care experienced.

The programme prepares students for a full UCL engineering undergraduate degree by providing a solid grounding in subject areas such as maths and physics, instilling academic confidence and building relevant skills.

To ensure students get the best out of their time at »Ê¼Ò»ªÈË, the programme also offers sector-leading student support, from pre-entry to post qualification, covering:

  • wellbeing and mental health support
  • financial and careers advice
  • tutoring, peer-to-peer mentoring, academic support and study planning.

It is taught at »Ê¼Ò»ªÈË East, ourÌýnewest campus on the Olympic Park in Stratford, giving students access to state-of-the-art making and design facilities. This enables students to learn by doing, in spaces specifically designed to encourage collaborative problem solving.

Why we're supporting the next generation of engineers

However the engineering sector is currently hampered by a lack of diversity in thought, expierence and approach. And there is aÌýdearth of opportunity for the future innovators who are unable to follow traditional paths into the profession. When we remove barriers to higher education, we ensure these industries have access to a more diverse range of voices.
