Student testimonials

The following quotes are from UCL Engineering Foundation Year students, who completed the programme in summer 2024.

Next year will be way easier…I already know how it (university) works; I already know the path to take. I just have to follow it."

“In my opinion, this programme's greatest strength was the collaborative, hands-on approach. Working in small groups on real-world engineering and computer science projects proved to be invaluable. The 'engineering skills'Ìýcourse was particularly insightful, helping me to obtain a deeper understanding of engineering principles and methodologies.
Beyond the academic rigour of UCL, the programme provided a crucial year to solidify my foundation in engineering and assess my suitability for university life. This is an essential programme for mature students seeking to leverage their experience, and younger students deciding their educational path. The programmeÌýnot only reinforced my foundational knowledge but also honed my learning styles. It's a fantastic platform for aspiring engineers to develop diverse teamwork skills in a supportive environment."

“The Engineering Foundation Year (EFY) has been a fantastic opportunity to exhibit my true potential. I have particularly enjoyed the Engineering Design Project module, where we were able to cultivate skills in various areas through working on different engineering disciplines. From the very first project I built skills in report writing and coding. Through the completion of this project, I have been able to build my confidence in seemingly small things, yet these things have created a huge difference in the way I present ideas and information to others. I have had the chance to make use of the amazing UCL East campus to further develop my skills with the use of the labs!
I strongly believe this programme is important as it bridges the gap between higher education and the socioeconomic disadvantage felt by some groups. Being exposed to an environment where I could thrive freely in the space of one year was truly what I needed to realise my potential and show myself what I can do. So many external factors can affect life before university and thus affect our grades, however during the EFY, my only focus was my studies thanks to the support of the EFY."
