Smart Cities panel explores the 'digital city'

26 July 2017

The panel brought community groups, academics and practitioners into dialogue about changing digital city systems

The Engineering Exchange hosted a panel and a on the theme ‘Smart Cities’.ÌýThe fully booked panel, called POWER TO THE CITIZEN! took place at BASE King’s Cross in July 2017. You can watch a video of the event below.

Speakers included architect Lucy Bullivant (seeÌý), Adam Dennett from the UCL Centre for Advanced Spatial Analysis (), Steven Lorimer from the GLA, Ava Fatah gen. Schieck from UCL’s Bartlett School of Architecture () andÌýNicolas Fonty fromÌý.

The event aimed to explore the changingÌýways in which citizensÌýdefine and engage with digital city systems. This no longer lies exclusively in the hands of architects, designers, engineers, computer scientistsÌýand urban planners. Instead, open-source tools and open-data platforms are opening up new collaborative opportunities for citizen participation.ÌýThe panel had two aims: understanding the challenges of engaging in this new paradigm; and with this knowledge, identifying new collaborative mechanisms for citizen-led digital city making.

The event was organised in partnership with theÌýInstitute for Digital Innovation in the Built Environment, UCLÌýÌýand the Bartlett Centre for Advanced Spatial Analysis (CASA).

The project collaborators willÌýbe releasing a manifesto/call to action based on the panel discussion. Please check back for updates. This event and associated outputs were supported by the UCLÌýÌý´Ú³Ü²Ô»å.
