16 September 2024

Congratulations to Dr James Robinson from the UCL Department of Chemical Engineering and the Advanced Propulsion Lab (APL) for being named the Faraday Institution 2024 Community Awards Researcher Development Champion.

Dr James Robinson

On 11 September 2024, at an awards ceremony, Dr James Robinson, Programme Director of the Advanced Propulsion MSc at »Ê¼Ò»ªÈË East’s Advanced Propulsion Lab, was honoured as the Faraday Institution’s 2024 Community Awards Researcher Development Champion for his exceptional support of early career researchers (ECRs).Ìý

The Faraday Institution is the UK’s centre for energy storage research and skills development.Ìý

As Chair of the ECR Committee, Dr Robinson led initiatives to help early career researchers develop their skills and careers. In 2024, he organised the ECR conference and training event, which brought together 210 ECRs for training, networking, and research presentations. He also launched the ECR Collaboration Award, providing researchers with the opportunity to apply for funding and lead their own projects.Ìý

Nominated by two groups of ECRs and supported by 24 researchers from 11 universities, Dr Robinson’s mentoring and creation of a positive research environment have significantly impacted many young scientists. His influence was further demonstrated by support from seven Faraday Institution projects and the LiSTAR project, where he serves as Project Leader.Ìý

Dr Robinson expressed his appreciation, stating: "I’m very grateful to each of the researchers who nominated me. It’s been lovely and quite humbling to read their testimonials. Since its inception, the Faraday Institution has fostered a unique community of ECRs. I’m very proud to have been able to support this and look forward to seeing further great initiatives that will enable energy storage research in the UK to continue to blossom."Ìý

Head of the UCL Department of Chemical Engineering, Prof Eva Sorensen MBE, said, "I cannot think of anyone more deserving of this recognition. Throughout his time in the department, James has consistently supported and encouraged colleagues and researchers. His work with the Faraday Institution has taken this commitment beyond the department to support ECRs nationally. He is a tremendous role model and a very strong contributor to the department, both professionally and personally. I am so very proud of him!"Ìý

We congratulate James on this well-deserved honour!Ìý
