Applications Open: IGP BAME Research Internship

Internship Overview

The Institute for Global Prosperity (IGP) is at the forefront of redefining prosperity in the 21st century. Our work includes research, data analysis, intervention strategies, and collaborative co-design, all to improve people's lives around the world. We offer one Prosperity Index Data Internship in London to join our dynamic research and action team. This initiative supports our broader goal of amplifying underrepresented voices in research and policy development for redefined prosperity. Selected interns will be fully integrated into our research processes, receiving mentorship, data training, and opportunities to produce research outputs.

  • Duration: 12 weeks, full-time (36.5 hours/week)
  • Start Date: 16 September 2024
  • Compensation: £26,543 per annum pro rata inclusive of London Allowance

Internship details

The 12-week internship programme is designed for individuals passionate about research, data analysis, communication, and public policy. Intern will contribute to various activities to enhance their CVs and improve future employability. Trainee will acquire essential skills and competencies required for researcher roles, gaining familiarity with the university sector. The key responsibilities of the IGPÌý
Prosperity Index Data Interns include:

•ÌýÌý ÌýSupporting the Data team in constructing prosperity indices
•ÌýÌý ÌýAnalyse and present research findings
•ÌýÌý ÌýDraft blog posts and longer research pieces
•ÌýÌý ÌýContributing to various outputs, such as reports, presentations to stakeholders etc.Ìý
•ÌýÌý ÌýData cleaning and analysis
•ÌýÌý ÌýEngage with external stakeholders, including government officials and policymakers


The placement will take place from 16th Sep 2024 for 12 weeks. The candidates will need an unrestricted right to work in the UK (the IGP is unable to sponsor visa applications for the training programme). The internship is paid at London Living Wage rates to ensure socio-economic disadvantage does not preclude participation. No additional funds are available to help with travel or subsistence during the placement, and we are unable to help with any accommodation requirements.

Candidate requirements

Applicants should be reliable and possess the following:

•ÌýÌý ÌýUK domiciled applicant who identifies as being from a Black, Asian or Minority Ethnic background.
•ÌýÌý ÌýA solid understanding of contemporary social, economic and political issues;
•ÌýÌý ÌýStrong quantitative analysis skills;
•ÌýÌý ÌýA relevant BA/BSc qualification from a university in the UK or equivalent knowledge gained in another environment
•ÌýÌý ÌýA commitment to supporting the IGP’s values and strategic focus on improving people’s quality of life
•ÌýÌý ÌýExperience using Stata and/or R

The IGP’s BAME Research Internship scheme is a positive action initiative aimed at UK BAME students. It addresses the underrepresentation of these groups in research and policymaking.

The application process has four elements:Ìý

1.ÌýÌý ÌýIn the application form, you need to provide some personal details. Applications will be assessed blind by a panel of reviewers so this information will only become visible to the selection panel if you are shortlisted.Ìý

2.ÌýÌý ÌýShort answer questions. You will be asked to provide answers to the following as part of the application (Each section has a 250-word limit.):Ìý

a.ÌýÌý ÌýPlease outline the key aspects of your education, employment and / or life experience that make you a suitable candidate for the intern placement scheme.Ìý
b.ÌýÌý ÌýWhat does prosperity mean to you?
c.ÌýÌý ÌýThe IGP’s work is focused on redesigning prosperity and improving the quality of people’s lives around the globe. In your view, what are the main challenges over the next three years?

3.ÌýÌý ÌýPlease ensure to include a sample (max 2000 words) demonstrating your ability to analyse and present research when submitting your application form. This could be anything focusing on data analysis (an essay, a piece of assessment, or part of your dissertation). Please provide an R script or Stata do file when applicable.


4.ÌýÌý ÌýShortlisted applicants will be contacted as soon as possible after the closing date, and we expect to hold first interviews in the week of 26-29 August (TBC).Ìý
