16 July 2021

BSSC celebrate the inspiring work of staff rallying to create a fair and sustainable future through teaching, research, and projects at the UCL Sustainability Special Awards 2021.

Sustainability awards

Congratulations to all BSSC staff who have been recognised for making change possible at 皇家华人 and beyond.听We鈥檙e thrilled to see the department creating听ideas to encourage sustainability while working from home;听including online wellbeing events,鈥痯lanting at home听campaigns and听strategic sustainability plans.

Sustainability Research Award

Awarded to the researcher/s whose contribution to the environment and/or society at 皇家华人, or beyond, has the greatest positive impact.

Winner

Priti Parikh
Dr Priti Parikh, Associate Professor, Head of Engineering for International Development Centre at the Bartlett School of Sustainable Construction

Priti has championed the role of infrastructure to address Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) over the last five years. She led a UCL team which demonstrated the links between sanitation and energy, climate change, health, education and poverty reduction, making a case for targeted action in sanitation. Until that point the linkages between water and the SDGs had been mapped but the role of sanitation had received very little attention. Priti has also led efforts to influence policy and practice, with her and her team鈥檚 work influencing the African Sanitation Strategy, and how SDGs are monitored in South Africa.

Green Impact Award

Bartlett School of Sustainable Construction鈥(BSSC Green Onions)听retain their Gold Award for Green Impact.

The Green Onions Team:

  • Taslima Ferdous
  • Polly Turner
  • Anita Treso
  • Pu Yang (PhD student)
  • Wu Yanga (PhD student)
  • Prof Aeli Roberts
  • Dr Niamh Murtagh

Anita Treso commented: 鈥淭his was very much a team effort this year. At one point, we weren鈥檛 even sure we were going to be able to submit to Green Impact with all the extraordinary conditions BSSC colleagues have had to work through this academic year. But we did it!

Thank you to Taslima Ferdous and Polly Turner for attending the audit and to Dr Niamh Murtagh and Prof. Aeli Roberts for their continued support and advice.

Green Impact is more than just about recycling waste, it鈥檚 about bringing colleagues and students from across UCL together.鈥
