New Architecture Writers (N.A.W.) is an experiment in radical architectural pedagogy with the intention of disrupting the conventional institutions of architectural discourse. N.A.W. began in 2017 and has since become a platform for new writing about architecture and cities by emerging critics of colour. The programme is directed by Thomas Aquilina and Tom Wilkinson with support from the Architecture Foundation and the Architectural Review.

The programme’s advisory board is made up of leading practitioners and writers in the architecture industry including Priya Khanchandani, David Ogunmuyiwa, Adrian Lahoud, Bartlett alumna Farshid Moussavi and Bartlett Visiting Professor Lesley Lokko. Over 100 writers, curators and critics have volunteered their time to New Architecture Writers as contributors and mentors since its inception.

Yanqi responded to the programme’s most recent Open Call earlier this year, submitting a short piece of writing building on his research at the York C20 Architectural Gazetteer, questioning the local Council’s failure to provide shelters for its twentieth-century public architecture, through a close study of the recently demolished Tang Hall Branch Library.

The programme started in April, and comprises six briefs spread across 12 months. So far, Yanqi’s cohort, the sixth in the programme's history, have been working on news writing and interviewing (with the re:arc institute). As part of the ongoing “Building Study” brief, his group toured the National Portrait Gallery with Thomas Longley of Jamie Forbert Architects, who recently completed a major conservation, retrofit and extension of the 1895 Gallery. N.A.W. will also host public events and share updates through their Instagram account.

Since it was launched in 2017, New Architecture Writers has welcomed a number of Bartlett students and alumni:

  • Shukri Sultan (Architectural History MA, 2021)
  • Gianluca Cavallaro-Ng (City Planning MPlan, 2020)
  • Mahika Gautam (Architectural and Interdisciplinary Studies BSc, 2020)

  • Calvin Po (Architecture BSc, 2013)
  • Ting-Jui Brook Lin (Architecture BSc (ARB/RIBA Part I) and Architecture MArch (ARB/RIBA Part 2), 2009)

Gold.
