Ashton Porter shortlisted for 2015 WAN Wood in Architecture Award

Suburban Studio by Bartlett School of Architecture Design Tutors Abigail Ashton and Andrew Porter (Ashton Porter Architects) is one of six schemes to be shortlisted for the . The award celebrates advances in wood design, showcasing the elegant, natural and versatile material that continues to challenge architects today.

The shortlisted scheme (pictured) is a single-storeyÌýstudio, structured entirely from timber stud work and plywood, located at the bottom of the garden of a semi-detached house in London. The scheme includes a courtyard garden between the house and studio that's landscaped with timber decking, including hatches that open to reveal a sandpit, fire pit and paddling pool. The judges all felt this scheme was refreshing and well-articulated, demonstrating the variety in which wood can be used.Ìý

The five other schemes shortlisted include: Metsä Group Head Office by Helin & Co Architects based in Espoo, Finland; Dune House in Terschelling, Netherlands by Marc Koehler Architects; Sayama Forest Chapel in Saitama, Japan by NAP Architects, Hacine Chérifi Gymnasium in Rillieux-la-Pape, France by Tectoniques; and the Federal Center South Building 1202 in Seattle, United States by ZGF Architects LLP.

The winning scheme will be announced on 8 October at , as part UK Construction Week. All shortlisted projects will be on display throughout the week.
