The members of the Democracy in the UK after Brexit Advisory Board provide guidance to the Constitution Unit’s project team on the design and execution of the project. They are diverse in their views and perspectives. Membership of the Board does not imply endorsement of any particular opinions on how democracy does or should operate in the UK.


Professor Catherine Barnard

is Professor of European Union and Labour Law at the University of Cambridge, Senior Tutor and a Fellow in Law at Trinity College, Cambridge, and Deputy Director of UK in a Changing Europe.


Baroness (Shami) Chakrabarti

is a former Director of Liberty and former Shadow Attorney General for England and Wales. She sits as a Labour peer in the House of Lords.


Joanna Cherry KC MP

has been the SNP MP for Edinburgh South West since 2015 and has served as her party’s Shadow Home Secretary and Shadow Secretary of State for Justice at Westminster.Ìý


Professor Sir John Curtice

is Professor of Politics at Strathclyde University, a Senior Fellow at UK in a Changing Europe and a Senior Research Fellow at NatCen Social Research.


Isabel Hardman

Frances Foley

is Deputy Director at Compass and previously worked on the Citizens’ Convention on UK Democracy.


Doreen Grove

is Head of Open Government at the Scottish Government, and is a member of the Open Government Partnership Practice Group on Dialogue and Deliberation.


Professor Katy Hayward

is Professor of Political Sociology at Queen’s University Belfast and a Senior Fellow of UK in a Changing Europe.


Murray Hunt

is Director of the Bingham Centre for the Rule of Law and a Visiting Professor in Human Rights Law at the University of Oxford.


David Jones MP

has been the Conservative MP for Clwyd West since 2005. He has been Secretary of State for Wales and a Minister of State at the Department for Exiting the European Union. He is now a member of the Public Administration and Constitutional Affairs Committee.


Sir Stephen Laws

was First Parliamentary Counsel between 2006 and 2012. He is currently a Senior Research Fellow on Policy Exchange’s Judicial Power Project.


Professor Laura McAllister

is Professor of Public Policy and the Governance of Wales in the Wales Governance Centre, Cardiff University.


Professor Anand Menon

is Professor of European Politics and Foreign Affairs at King’s College London, and the Director of UK in a Changing Europe.


Cat Smith MP

has been the Labour MP for Lancaster and Fleetwood since 2015. She served as Shadow Secretary of State for Young People and Democracy between 2016 andÌý2021.


Professor Graham Smith

is Professor of Politics and the Director of the Centre for the Study of Democracy at the University of Westminster.

Jeremy Wright KC MP

has been the Conservative MP for Kenilworth and Southam (previously Rugby and Kenilworth) since 2005. He has been Attorney General for England and Wales and Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media, and Sport. He is now a member of the Committee on Standards in Public Life.
